In his book “Artists and Writers in Paris: The Bohemian Idea 1803-1867”, Malcolm Easton notes that the beret came back into vogue among artists as a sign of a renewed respect for Rembrandt in 1830. It remained “vividly imprinted on the public imagination, and served to assist caricaturists in their task of building up an instantly-recognizable type”.
